There are a few people I would like to ask this question last week, but I didn’t ! Incidentally, they all work for the bank! Which make me wonder what kind people they hired to work in the bank nowadays?

The first incident, I walked into the bank, requested a “reduce of mortgage interest rate”, two customer officers told me there is no such thing. When I insisted there is, they asked me to write a letter.(And you thought that’s a special talent of government bureaucrats to stop people from bothering them!) I live 45 minutes away from the bank, I was not going to drive home, type out a letter and drive back there, so I requested a piece of paper and drafted a letter on the spot and asked them to fax the request to the HQ. I got a call from the HQ the next day, offered me a 2% reduction in interest rate!!

The second incident is an old issue that had not been solved for four years. I have a margin trading account with this bank and have an online account for stocks trading. Four years ago, I forgot the username and password, my account was suspended after three unsuccessful attempts. I was told to go to the branch to restore the account and the fellow at the branch asked me to call the customer careline. The customer careline people asked me to see the fellow at the branch to get the access code, after being kicked around like a ball for a few times, I just gave up. Recently, as I am trying to take care of the banking and financial matters before leaving for IL, and I wanted to sell the remaining stocks, I went back to the branch to enquire about how to restore the password (Amazingly, the same guy I talked to four years ago still works there and deals with this kind of problem) But, looks like he has not been equipped with the right product knowledge in this four years! Guy A at the branch asked me to call the customer careline, guy B at the customer caerline asked me to see A, so I told A and B, why don’t you figure out what to do and call me! That was a week ago, I am still waiting for their calls!

The third incident happened at the same bank of the first incident, I handed in a few security documents for verification and certification to a woman officer, was told it would take 2 weeks to get back to me. As I didn’t want to go down again to pick up the documents, I requested for the documents to courier to me. After two weeks, no news, but I was too busy accompanying my mom on a hospital tour and didn’t drop or call to check on the status of the documents. Four weeks later, I called the branch and enquired about the status of the documents, the woman who picked up the phone told me she couldn’t tell me anything wouldn’t check anything for me on the phone, I have to go to the branch personally. I got really annoyed with her, I asked for her name but she refused to give me. I then called the customer careline, made a complaint about it and asked to trace the whereabouts of the documents. The man on the customer careline was helpful, he was surprised that I was even told it would take two weeks to verify the documents, he said the branch could usually do the verification on the spot! Anyway, he verified with his superior, called the branch and managed to get them to trace the documents. He then called me back a few hours later, told me I could go to the branch to pick up the documents the next day, they would be verified. I was not free the next day, so I went in the following business day. Guess what ? I drove 45 minutes down there, was told they need to send the documents to HQ for verification and the woman who was in charged of this matter was on leave and I have to come back the next day. My face must have changed color, I tell you. I sat there, insisted that I would not leave without the documents. The woman who served me didn’t know what to do, she went inside and came back with another woman who looked like she is the supervisor or manager. (What’s wrong with this people who never identify themselves? Isn’t that a common courtesy to let your customers know who they are dealing with? ) She apologized for the “miscommunication” and offered to courier the documents to me the next day, so I don’t have to drive one and half hours to and fro just to pick up the documents.

The ridiculous thing is: after all the hassles and five weeks of waiting for the documents, was told they are no longer needed by another institution who required it, just because they never update their website!!!

Malaysia boleh!

One thing I really don’t understand. The airfare for flights originate from KL are much more expensive than the ones originate from LA for the same route !

For example, to fly from KL to LA and return costs RM5566 (6 months ticket). At the prevailing exchange rate, it’s about USD1700+.

Whereas to fly from LA to KL and return cost USD1186.20 or at RM3855.

The difference is about USD514 or RM1700!!

Why is our National carrier charging us more to fly out of KL ?

Our friends who are into golf for instance have so many sets of golf clubs, but he is constantly buying new clubs which he believes can keep improving his handicaps.

I bet for people who are into paintball game, their closet will be full of paintball equipment and protective gears. When they go to shopping mall, they will be lingering around the counter that sells all the tippmann gears, like a seven years old at the candy counter? Oh, am I not grateful that the big boy’s hobby is collecting toys that cost a few dollars, not a few hundred dollars. :-)

But the procrastinator won’t move things along until the last minute and I refused to throw myself into a stressful situation where nothing is ready. So let him pays through his nose for expensive air tickets during peak season!

We got away with that because both our parents are liberals and don’t care much for the formalities.

Everyone especially woman has the so called dream wedding. In my humble opinion, it is really not wise to spend so much time and money in wedding planning unless you are born with the silver spoons and money is not a problem. Wedding is just the beginning of a marriage, which needs more planning ahead. Furthermore, I have seen perfectionist friends who spent a year preparing for the big day, but I have also seen friends who got ready in less than a month! So, I guess how much do you want to stress over your wedding preparation is up to you! :-)

He asked me about how to start a blog and how to go about doing it. Then, he just went off to learn everything on his own. Yes, everything, though being told he can ask me anytime he gets stuck, he figured out things on his own and didn’t have to contact me at all!

On the other hand, you get people who expect you to serve them free lunch everyday. They don’t want to read the information you forward them and want you to spoon feed them or do things for them. Frankly, I don’t have much time left to dispose stuffs and start packing, who has the time to hold their hands solving every problem for them? Didn’t most of us learn from scratch relying on the indisposable Google god for guidance and inspiration? :-)

Her friend runs a small food stall, and is supplying food for the functions during the election campaign. The smart auntie said she doesn’t care whether they are from BN or opposition, she will do their business. I tell you, election is an expensive business, she gets paid 1000 bucks to prepare food for one function. You know lah, folks will show up only if food is provided. :-)

The renewal process was very quick, I came home really impressed with their efficiency. Went there at about 1.30 p.m, not many people were there. I have gotten the form the day before, so I showed the receptionist the filled form and the passport sized photos required, the receiptionist gave me a number.

My number was called within 5 minutes and after finger printing and payment, was given a receipt and told to come back in 2 hours. I was there at the immigration office for less than 1o minutes!

So I went home, ate my lunch and got some house chores done, went to do grocery shopping and stopped by the immigration office on the way home at about 3.00 p.m. I gave the receipt to the collection counter, and within 10 minutes, my name was called and I had my new passport in hand.

All in all, that was a very pleasant experience. Considered the fact that immigration was department that received the most complaints previously, they really did some clean up work. One thing I noticed, the officers actually smiled and talked nicely, they didn’t act like you owned them money, which they did before the clean up.

Many years ago, a group of us were quizzed by our joker friend TL whether we want happiness or wealth. One of the girls said she would rather be rich and not happy than happily poor.

Not many of us are really “poor” in that sense that we are struggling to have the basics needs i.e. shelter, food. Unless we are born with silver spoons or inherited a lot of wealth from our ancestors, most of us have many constraints in what we can do with the limited financial resources that we have. In fact, we work hard to put a roof over our head, or rather work hard for the bank servicing the mortgage during the golden years of our life. But, that doesn’t mean we can not live a fulfilling and happy life, does it?

You would have thought people like our wealthy acquaintance who had accumulated enough wealth to retire before 50 will be living happily ever after. Man may have all the wonderful plans but God is the one that execute the plans. It was really a hard time when his wife asked for a divorce and decided to leave him with two grown up boys. He remarried 3 years ago and have a 2 years old girl. Only to discover he has liver cancer three months ago and may not live long enough to see his girl entering school. Yes, he has the wealth and happiness, but may not have the health to enjoy both of them soon.

Doesn’t that make you feel blessed to be healthy to fight about money matters with your spouse.:-)

Attended a CNY gathering with friends from the bible study group tonight. A couple who have recently joined us have graciously open their house to host the potluck dinner.

A few of the members in the bible study group are medical doctors and accountants and they live in huge bungalows. But this house that we gathered last night is something else, it’s a mansion! Anna’s son the joker asked:”May I speak to the manager please”, pretending that he is at a posh hotel. :-)

Indeed, it’s almost like a five star hotel, swimming pool, Balinese open bathroom with jacuzzi, AV room with theater system and screen that cover the whole wall, motorized shades that cover the pool, the yard, the bathroom when it rains or the sun gets too hot.

We were impressed all the way when the host brought us around for a tour. It’s luxury, even to the rich doctors who live in big houses.

This photo is taken from the second floor showing the kitchen, dining area and the living hall on the ground floor, which is easily the size of a normal single family home.

The host is a medical doctor in his 50s, but he makes most of his money from stock investment and proper management of the wealth accumulated from his medical practice. He has retired from medical practice, divorced and remarried few years back. When you talked to him, he doesn’t sound like a medical doctor, he certainly sounds like one of the wealth management experts from Northern Trust, the company that provide banking, asset management and asset services to affluent families and individuals. :-)

OMG, I forgot the PIN numbers after not using it for a month. I dare not try another time, as the machine would swallow the card after three unsuccessful attempts!
I visited a friend in PA that summer, his father is one of those die hard pro guns fellows. He has 30 over guns and riffles in his collections. Mind you, they were not the BB guns , they were real guns, long ones and short ones. My friend’s father used some of them for hunting deers, but most are collectibles. He let me held the guns, they were damn heavy, I almost dropped them. He thought that’s so funny that he invited me to go to shooting practice with him, I had to say “No, thank you”.:-)

I’m actually quite surprised by the number of women who enjoy watching football and baseball games. They may even dress in clothings that has their favorite team while screaming to the screens. They know the rules, the plays and the athletes. Some of them even do the Fantasy thing, play the games on their computers! As for me, sport is boring, takes up a lot of time and makes too much noises, I would rather hide at a quiet corner and read a book.

Can you see this particular post on my blog about the recent death of Heath Ledger : Young actor died of overdose ? It came up No 1 on the SERP, even before the two giant news portals - news.com.au and CNN.com, that’s why I was getting all this hits all of a sudden.

What’s SERP, you may ask? SERP, or search engine results page, is the listing of web pages returned by a search engine in response to a keyword query. However, don’t ask me how I did that. I have done nothing, it’s just pure luck. It won’t stay too long though, No 1 today only. But, kind of ego boasting and make my day though. :-)

Her mother is a sophisticated piano teacher and a woman who won’t get out of the door without putting on full makeup. I don’t know whether they are ultra rich, but I guess they are. As they were always well dressed in the latest fashions with their brand named handbags and accessories whenever I met them.

Back to the sophistication part, how many of you have the knowledge and discerning spirit to spot a fake Louis Vuitton handbag from 50 meters away? I was impressed when the 16 years old told us how you can do that. My friend and I had a good laugh, because she was carrying a fake brand name handbag and I was carrying a no name handbag.

The girl has obviously acquired all this skills from her mother and all the fashion and women magazines they have been reading. What were you doing when you were sixteen? I am pretty sure I don’t know anything about all this at her age. :-)

My friend was telling me that she was so exhausted playing chauffeur to two school going children. During the first week of school, she drove the older girl to school, met her teachers, paid the fees, sorted out the books and attended some briefing and orientation. Then she came home to drive the younger one to kindergarten. By the time she got back from the kindergarten, it was time for her to drop by the school to see how her older child was doing. By the time she bid goodbye to her older girl and drove home, it was closed to 11 am, that was about time to pick up the younger girl from kindergarten! So, basically she was driving between the schools and her home from 7.00 a.m to 2.00 p.m.

You know, back when I was in school I don’t remember my mom having too come and see the teacher, pay the fees, attend briefings and all that nonsense. I still remember the first day I went to school. My mom brought me there on her bicycle, waited till I was in the correct class and left before the teacher entered the class. I was quite scared but I knew my mom had told the neighbor’s daughter who was two years older to keep an eye on me. First day of school was quite an uneventful day as far as I remembered.

They do look like they were taken out of the fashion magazines, don’t they? I wonder would the hospital goes wild with the pretty nurses clad in animal prints. :-)

Should we even be surprised or wonder why men’s jewelry is approaching center stage in the fashion world?

But what kind of jewelry do modern men want? What catches their eye? As more men are at ease and confident enough to wear the tateossian bracelets, necklaces, or rings, many are also not afraid to show their desire to parade their identity.

I guess more varied forms of jewelry will become socially acceptable for them and to the ladies whom they try to impress. Anyway, if your man wears any jewelry, it will be so easy for you to get a gift for him! :-)

They asked me to explain a letter from the land office and to help with a tendency agreement recently, so I learned that they have several rental properties that bring them residue income every month. You would not be able to tell from their humble outlooks that they own several properties around town and their net worth is over several millions!

My little brother who works in the bank selling personal loans told me that his clients are mostly high income earners who have a few big cars and big house in payments and have maxed out their credit cards. (In another words, they are in debt up to their nose) So, never judge a book by its cover, nor a person by the car she/he drives or the way he/she dresses.:-)

Decades ago, we look for a job through newspapers and also through networks of friends and relatives. But, since the popularity of online job sites started about 10 years ago, many people no longer buy newspapers to look for a job! It’s so convenient, you just have to create an online job profile and start searching and applying for jobs online, at the comfort of your home.

Monster.ca is a Canadian based company that has been around for quite a while, I remember bumping into the site as long ago as perhaps 10 years ago! I’m glad to see that it’s still around and indeed it’s become a worldwide operation with sites for specific countries such as the United States, Australia, Hong Kong, and many European countries. Is there any part of the globe that they don’t cover? All this can only translate into so many recruiting options for employers and opportunities for job seekers.

If you are visiting the site to look over their job listing you’ll find a wide variety of positions from professional listings in the engineering field to service or retail industries. You can search by the type of employment you are looking for or you can search for jobs near your locality.

If you are a job seeker, you can register and create a profile that includes your resume or curriculum vitae. This will stay on the site and you can update it over time. Employers can look over the listings as well to find potential employees that might suit whatever position for which they are hiring.

If you are representing a company i.e. human resource personals, you can easily create a company profile and start posting jobs in the system. The job seekers who found your postings will then apply through the system. You may call them for personal interviews after screening through the applicants. As you can see, the process is rather straightforward and cannot be any simple than that.

There are quite a number of other resources at Monster for anyone who is searching for a job. I’m certain if you visit the various centers you would gain some valuable insights that would help you to get through interviews successfully. First and foremost, you may learn to create an impressive resume that catches an employer’s eyes and lands you an interview. :-)

There are maybe a lot hassles living in a college town, but the advantage of living near a university or college is, they are always students looking to buy your used stuffs and save them from the landfill. One’s trash can be another person’s treasure:-)

We sold the refrigerator for 50 bucks less than we paid for. This is because we have gotten both the refrigerators used from the recycled yard. They were originally discarded from the university hostels, in fact they were fairly new and worked like a charm for the past four years. Don’t you think someone in the university is getting a lot of commissions by replacing this refrigerators with new ones?

As long as our society still place a lot of emphasis on paper qualifications in securing a good job, everyone will try to get “qualified” by hook or by crook. As an ex university instructor, I can testify that cheating and plagiarism are rampant. Not only the students would try to bring in notes, write formulas on their hands, pencil case, calculator, they also copy and paste their assignments a lot. Some of my colleagues refused to give assignments for that reason, because we generally only get a few sets of answers only.

The internet has been a great source and excellent research tool, but with the Internet, it’s also easier for students to cheat. They can practically copy and paste their assignments entirely from the internet. What more now they can even buy essay from websites that help them with essay writing. These websites have professional British and American writers who can do custom writing. These custom research papers are promised to be 100% plagiarism.

I wonder if you contracted all your assignments to this service and graduated with a piece of paper, how much is that piece of paper worth? Especially in the long run, don’t you think the employer would eventually find out you actually do not know nuts? :-)

When we were living in VA, I often saw a group of people gathered at the park outside the library, dressed in renaissance costume. At first, I thought they were rehearsing a play or a theatrical production or something like that.

However, later I learned from my friend Heidi that they belonged to a group of renaissance fans who were into historic reenactments. I also saw them at the Renaissance Fair in Stafford County, VA in the spring. They were all dressed up in the flamboyant jesters and the whirling capes, and the women looked so feminine.

It’s this aspect of renaissance thing that is strangely appealing to many people. Lots of people like to dress up in costumes and play let’s pretend. May be there’s a part of us that never grows up. If you’ve ever been to a Civil War re-enactment, you know what I mean. We like to play like we’re doing things just exactly like they did in the “olden days” . . . just as long as we can get in our cars and go home and take a nice hot shower when it’s all over. That’s sort of what this is all about.:-)

This is the first weekend of my December break, first Saturday I didn’t have to teach, it’s so nice to sleep in and not have to rush out the door at 7.30 a.m. It takes 30 minutes to travel from the house to the center. Though the first class doesn’t start until 9.00 a.m, but there will always be crazy parents who call or drop their children at as early as 8.00 a.m.

This people are really thick skin, even though you keep telling them you don’t open until 9.00 a.m, they still insist they would drop their children before the door opens. I hate to keep the children waiting at the door and risk their safety, so I do open the door before 9.00 a.m grudgingly for their sake. Sometime I just buy the newspaper and read while waiting for the other children to show up at 9.00 a.m.

At least this people are not as rude as the other one who called at 7.15 a.m and demanded to know why I was not there, I have since waved sayonara to that one, customers may be always right, but there is a limit of how much nonsense I will take.:-)

It was a big event, I thought my cousin must have hired a wedding planner to do the job as her father could certainly afford it. When I found out she single-handedly organizing the whole event by herself, I wanted to take my hat off and give her a salute, man. (never mind that I was not wearing a hat) :-)

The most amazing thing was, there was no hiccup at all throughout the wedding. From the guest sitting arrangement to all the unique wedding favors she has prepared, everything just flow so smoothly. I told Veronica that if I ever get married again (opps..), she will be my wedding planner.:-)

Welcome to the land of hugeness, the people are huge, the pizzas are huge and now even the fans are gigantic.:-) Have you seen a huge Industrial Ceiling Fan as shown in the picture?

Hubby’s uncle runs a farming corporation and as you may know summer in Illinois can be very overbearingly hot and humid. They do have huge fans like this at their factory. The fans are ceiling mounted, they keep the air flow and is an energy efficient way to stay cool.

Do you notice that some of the networks that we work with now have people from India approving our posts? I noticed recently I have a lot of traffics from India accessing especially the posts for one particular network. If you pay attention to the rate they approved the posts, it gets so speedy all of a sudden this week. I used to have twenty over posts unapproved and they are all approved this week!

If you ever call Paypal, you would notice your calls would be routed to don’t know where, and people who answer the calls sound like they are from Mainland China!

Many American companies have been outsourcing jobs to lower paid workers in less developed countries since the late 80s. That has contributed to rampant worker insecurity and hurts the local labor market in America for years. But, a contrary view is that more people are employed and benefit from paid work.

I guess how one feels about this whole outsourcing trend depends on which side of the fence one is sitting at. If you just lost a job because your company restructured and moved part of the operation to offshore outsourcing centers, you of course will be bitter about the whole thing. But, if you have to constantly deal with unproductive workers who take ages to get a simple thing done, you probably wish some workers in India would take over these losers’ jobs. Let me tell you, the workers at the local banks who we have to deal with are in this group. LOL

When I drove out of the hospital planning to go home to rest, I saw this facial and spa place that I used to frequent 3-4 years ago. I have not visited the place since we started the tutoring business because my free time did not coincident with the opening hours of this place.

I was thinking: I deserved a little pampering after a long hard day. So, I popped in for a facial. The girl there were surprised to see me, in fact, most of the girls that I knew were no longer there, except for one. I couldn’t even remember her name. Anyway, the massage was good, I couldn’t care less for the facial. I have used cheaper facial products bought at the pharmacies. I don’t think my face has turned any worse in the last four years that I didn’t visit them. Though they keep telling me the black heads are so hard. :-)

In fact, that was my response when I first heard about that in America. When my friend told me I have to forward the time one hour, I didn’t know what she was talking. So, I missed Church that Sunday because when she came to pick me up, I was still in my dreamland. I thought it was so absurd that clock can be adjusted by human.:-)

I have read up about the origin and rational for daylight saving time since then and understand how it works now. What does it mean to Malaysian people living on the equator? It simply means the time difference with Eastern time is 13 hours now instead of 12 hours. So, it’s 1.00 p.m Malaysian time to submit your last post of the day on PPP instead of 12.00 p.m previously. ;-)

What do I know about vodka drinks ? Not much, really. I used to read Russian novels and learned that the Russians love vodka as much as the French loves wine. When I think of Vodka, I always think of Russians. The association of these two nouns is almost mythological. But, did the Russians actually invent vodka? And how did vodka became such an integral part of lives of ordinary Russians

There is a Russian saying that goes like this:

There cannot be not enough snacks,
There can only be not enough vodka.
There can be no silly jokes,
There can only be not enough vodka.
There can be no ugly women,
There can only be not enough vodka.
There cannot be too much vodka,
There can only be not enough vodka.

When I saw this site that features hundred of “recipes” for different types of vodka drinks and other cocktails, I thought this would be a great resource for someone who is training to be bartender or someone who enjoys the spirit. You can find so much information about how to mix your own drinks from the scratch. You can learn about what are base spirit, different types of flavoring agents and fillers. If you like the spirit and would like to mix your own drinks, go check out the link provided above.

Columbus Day, Indigenous Peoples Day for some, Italian Achievement Day for others, it’s also called Discoverers’ Day or Pioneers’ Day. But traditionally, the second Monday of October has been known as Columbus Day, and it is one of the 10 holidays proclaimed by the federal government of USA.

“CHRISTOPHER COLUMBUS discovered America in 1492″, at least that is what all elementary school children were taught. Of course, Columbus did not “discover” North America, and the regions he explored were already inhabited by the Aborigines. He only discovered them from the viewpoint of the Europeans. Yet his first voyage did prove one thing for sure, that the earth was not flat, and it was bigger than he had thought.

How sexy you feel is how you see yourself in the mirror. Being more fleshy than the super models doesn’t mean you can’t dress up nor anyone can prohibit you from shopping for cheap lingerie. You can say I am like the ostrich, bury my head into the sand, and pretend nothing is wrong. I may be vain, but I draw the line there, I would not cut myself up to look good.:-)

When I was 8 or 9 years old, I woke up one morning with the worst ever ache from a back tooth cavity!! I tried to get back to sleep so I could forget about the pain but I couldn’t. Since it hurt so bad, I cried and cried. So, my grandmother gave me a painkiller, the pain was relieved after 10 minutes. Nobody knew (including me) that I was allergy to the painkiller, it caused rashes all over my body. The worst was: once the pain came back and the rashes haven’t subsided, I was having both rashes and tooth ache!

Then, my mother had me gurgle with the iced water. Obviously I was desperate and in much pain, would try anything that promised to relieve the pain. So I resorted to gurgle with the iced water, somehow it worked because the intense pain was gone in about half an hour of gurgling, rinsing and spitting out the iced water.

I have very low threshold for pain and after this painful experience, I always make sure I brush my teeth after meals, see the dentist twice a year. I must say I haven’t have to go through the same pain again all this years!

Those of you who have recently suffered from tooth ache probably have heard of this Over-the-Counter Dental Cement called Dentemp OS. Honestly, this is the first time I heard of this product. It’s apparently a FDA Approved First Aid product for fillings and loose caps. It’s tested and fully comply with FDA Regulations for Oral Care.

This product promised to provide fast, temporary relief of pain and discomfort. You just have to remove the plastic vial and use it as temporary dental repair to replace lose fillings and may even use to temporarily seal loose crowns. No, you are not playing dentist at home with this, you still have to get an appointment with the dentist, after the pain is gone!

I stayed up late to write paid posts last night and only got up at 8.30 a.m this morning. Found out there was no electricity supply, so I happily went out for a walk and after that stopped by the grocery store to pick up some grocery and had breakfast there. By the time I reached home, it was already 11.00 a.m. Still no electricity!

I spent another hour cooking and eating lunch, then trying to take a nap. But the darn phone kept ringing ! Who keeps calling with a private phone number? I do not answer phone calls with numbers I couldn’t see as it usually ends up being a “you have been selected” phone calls from credit cards or insurance companies.

Needless to say I wasted the whole morning without getting anything done. At 1.00 p.m, I was wondering how come power failure lasted so long, feeling perplexed, I went to ask the next door neighbor when the electricity would be restored. He was giving me some kind of puzzled look. Then, I looked into his house, saw his television was turned on. How come he got electricity and I didn’t have?

My kind neighbor reminded me that maybe the fuse went off this morning during the thunderstorm. Aaah, how come I never thought of that!! Unbelievable, I was so dumb.

Anyway, that was my exciting day so far. Now I’m busy playing catch up on all the reserved/assigned paid posts on the montessori blog!
